The University of Tulsa's Petroleum Engineering Department

UNDERGRADUATE PROGRAM

OBJECTIVES / OUTCOMES

The objective of the undergraduate program is to provide basic and applied knowledge in petroleum engineering, with equal emphasis on drilling and completion, production and reservoir areas using the fundamental building blocks of mathematics, physical and engineering sciences.

Specific Programs Objectives*:

  1. To produce a petroleum engineer who is capable of working as a drilling and completions, production, or reservoir engineer;
  2. To develop the ability to analyze, synthesize, and design open-ended petroleum engineering systems using available tools, understand the associated uncertainties, and evaluate the economic and social impact;
  3. To develop the ability to synthesize inputs from various sources and articulate technical concepts.

Programs Outcomes**:

  1. Ability to apply knowledge of math, science, and engineering;
  2. Ability to design, conduct experiments, and to analyze and interpret data;
  3. Ability to design a system, component, or process to meet desired need;
  4. Ability to function on multi-disciplinary teams;
  5. Ability to identify, formulate, and solve engineering problems;
  6. Understanding of professional and ethical responsibilities;
  7. Ability to communicate effectively;
  8. The broad education necessary to understand the impact of engineering solutions in a global and social context;
  9. Recognition of the need for, and an ability to engage in life-long learning;
  10. Knowledge of contemporary issues;
  11. Ability to use the techniques, skills, and modern engineering tools necessary for engineering practice;
  12. Obtain basic knowledge of design principles in each area of petroleum engineering - drilling, production, and reservoir - and be aware of their interdependence.

* Objectives are expectations from a graduate 3-5 years after graduation.
** Outcomes are expectations from a graduate at the time of graduation.
