Alumnus of the Month - December 2005
A. M. Sam Sarem
Sam graduated in 1954 from The University of Tulsa with a BSPE (Refining). After finishing his degree he joined Sinclair Research (ARCO) in Tulsa while working on his Masters Degree at night. He received his MSPE (Production) from TU in 56 and went to OU to get his PhD in Engineering Science in 64. After working 10 years for Sinclair Research on Fluid Flow and Phase Behavior, he started working for UNOCAL Science and Technology Division in Brea California. There, he worked on enhanced oil recovery and headed the Reservoir Engineering Research and Technical Service Group. He has authored more than 20 technical papers, over 30 patents and has given over 100 technical talks worldwide and has taught Petroleum Engineering courses in Norway, Indonesia, Iran, OU, UCLA, USC, Cal State University Long Beach and Cal State University Fullerton. Since 1993 he has had his own consultancy called IPRC (sam4iprc.com) in Yorba Linda, California and has been a trouble shooter for the West Coast Petroleum Technology Transfer Council. His wife, Loretta, is from Tulsa. His son, Scott, and his wife are both graduates of UCLA law school and with their three boys live in Carlsbad, California. His daughter, Susie and her husband Dean Beckwith are graduates of Biola University in California and have four children and live in Pierre, South Dakota. His daughter, Elaine, and her husband, USAF Major Dr. Gilmore, live with their son Warren in San Antonio, Texas. To show his appreciation to the premier education he received in Alborz Private High School in his native Teheran, Iran; and the Tulsa University that gave him a multidisciplinary education in Refining and Reservoir Engineering preparing him so well for his career, he recently sponsored a yearly scholarship endowment at TU for the Iranian students who come to TU to study Petroleum Engineering. What he remember most about TU is the kindness he received from two ladies: Mrs. Watenbarger, the Graduate Dean’s secretary and Mrs. Sidwell, the foreign Student Advisor.
